The School

The Dutch School for Classical Shiatsu began in 1983 in West Holland and became officially established in 1990.
The school runs basic and diploma courses for people who are interested in the theory and practice of oriental techniques of healing and diagnosis. There are seminars with Japanese teachers held in the school and students may study with them after completing the three-year diploma course to obtain advanced certificates of practice. One of the Japanese teachers is associated permanently with the school.
The teachers of the diploma level courses have all studied with Oriental specialists for a number of years.
The ideology of the school is to encourage students to not only master the various techniques but to study and exercise by themselves and in student groups.
Although Shiatsu is a protected and registered therapy in Japan and is generally accepted in most European countries, it is still not recognized as a healing art in Holland. The Dutch School of Classical Shiatsu is registered and has been certified as a contribution to health and employment by the regional government under which the school functions and has been declared VAT (BTW) free for the second and third year of the therapist certificate course.
The strategy of the school is based on the classical and traditional manner of supporting students. There are basic courses in several cities given by qualified practitioners in Leiden, Dordrecht, Heerhugowaard, Alkmaar, Beverwijk, Gouda, Lisse, Amsterdam, Delft and The Hague. These practitioners function under the auspices of the school and there is regular communication and study between the school and its qualified practitioners. Practitioners meet with the Director of the school to discuss case histories and new developments.
The school runs a residential course every year for students in the Dutch countryside for a week and has many guests in the summertime. Practitioners and students practise diagnostic techniques on their patients in study groups with their teachers.
