Course Description

Niveau 1, 2021 start op 25 juni met haar Opleiding in 3 blokken van 4 achtereenvolgende dagen van vrijdag t/m maandag:
25 t/m 28 juni; 30 juli t/m 2 augustus en 1 t/m 4 oktober. Examen: Zaterdag 11 december 2021.


This year forms the basis for the upcoming therapist. In this year the foundation is laid for the professional practice. The student becomes familiar with the basic techniques and principles of Shiatsu and Do-In.


Do-In is inherent to Shiatsu. The following will be taught, among other topics:

  • Breathing techniques with the use of Chi-Kung exercises (iron shirt style)
  • Stretching of the 12 meridians with accompanying explanations
  • Partner exercises for awareness and stretching of the meridians with diagnostics, and examples of imbalances within the meridian system.
  • Exercises for the preparation of the body to enable performance of the treatment positions.
  • Development of “Ki” through concentration, meditation and moving meditation exercises with explanation of the most important factors and exercises applicable to the upcoming therapist.


This encompasses the use of all the basic techniques. The focus is on the quality of the touch. The following will be discussed, among other topics:

  • Correct use of fingers, thumbs, hands, elbows, knees and feet.
  • The cooperation and connection between the two hands, the ‘yin’ as supporting/ mother hand and ‘yang’ as the active hand.
  • The katas: correct postures for practising Shiatsu with a person in the front lying position, back lying position, sitting position, and side lying position. The focus is on the breathing, the relaxation of the body and the use of one’s own bodyweight for the correct amount of pressure. The feeling and experiencing of “Ki”.
  • Meridian stretching to activate specific meridians.
  • The application of Shiatsu in correspondence with the day, time, season, and theory of the five elements.
  • Learning to understand en feel KYO (empty) and JITSU (full) with the hands.
  • Introduction to the 4 “SHINS”: 1. Bo-Shin: Observation 2. Bun-Shin: Listening 3. Mon-Shin: Conversation and analysis 4. Setsu-Shin: Touching and feeling


The theoretical aspect encompasses the philosophy and basic principles of Traditional Oriental medicine. The following is discussed, among other topics:

  • The concept of yin and yang and their meaning and applicability in relation to Shiatsu and Do-In.
  • The concept of ‘Hara’ and its role as the center of the body, the center of gravity and furthermore the power source of the body.
  • The concept of “Ki”, and its physical and psychological meaning.
  • A proper understanding of the relationship between oriental and western interpretations of both physiological as psychological syndromes.
  • Introduction to diagnostics: facial diagnostic, tongue, voice and breathing.

The PROGRAMME OF THE WEEKENDS follows a fixed order:

1st weekend: Disciplined Katas for the backside of the body in the front lying position.

2nd weekend: 
Disciplined Katas for the front and back side of the body, respectively in the back lying position and the front lying position.

3rd weekend: 
Disciplined Katas for the front side of the body in the back lying position.

4th weekend: Disciplined Katas for the front side of the body in the back lying position.

5th weekend: Disciplined Katas for the body in the sitting position.

6th weekend: Disciplined Katas for the body in the side lying position.

  • Anushka Hofman

    Senior DO-IN teacher Anushka Hofman is the founder of the 'Dutch School for DO-IN' and has personally trained most DO-IN teachers working in the Netherlands. She studied classical Shiatsu and DO-IN with Alan Nash and Japanese teachers L. Kawada, W. Ohashi, Michio Kushi and Kyoko Onishi. Anushka is driven by her passion for art, dance, Eastern philosophy and psychology. The healing magic of movement, in which the invisible, unexplainable, is made tangible.
