In the first year the foundation is laid for the professional practice. The student becomes familiar with the basic techniques and principles of Shiatsu and Do-In.

DO-IN

Do-In is inherent to Shiatsu. The following will be taught, among other topics:

  • Breathing techniques with the use of Chi-Kung exercises (iron shirt style)
  • Stretching of the 12 meridians with accompanying explanations
  • Partner exercises for awareness and stretching of the meridians with diagnostics, and examples of imbalances within the meridian system.
  • Exercises for the preparation of the body to enable performance of the treatment positions.

  • Correct use of fingers, thumbs, hands, elbows, knees and feet.
  • The cooperation and connection between the two hands, the ‘yin’ as supporting/ mother hand and ‘yang’ as the active hand.
  • The katas: correct postures for practising Shiatsu with a person in the front lying position, back lying position, sitting position, and side lying position. The focus is on the breathing, the relaxation of the body and the use of one’s own bodyweight for the correct amount of pressure. The feeling and experiencing of “Ki”.
  • Meridian stretching to activate specific meridians.
  • The application of Shiatsu in correspondence with the day, time, season, and theory of the five elements.
  • Learning to understand en feel KYO (empty) and JITSU (full) with the hands.
  • Kennismaking met de 4 “SHINS”:
    1. Bo-shin – observatie
    2. Bun-shin – luisteren
    3. Mon-shin – het gesprek en analyse
    4. Setsu-shin – het aanraken en voelen

THEORY

Het theoretische aspect omvat de filosofie en basisbegrippen van de traditionele oosterse geneeskunde. Aan de orde komen onder andere:

  • The concept of yin and yang and their meaning and applicability in relation to Shiatsu and Do-In.
  • The concept of ‘Hara’ and its role as the center of the body, the center of gravity and furthermore the power source of the body.
  • The concept of “Ki”, and its physical and psychological meaning.
  • A proper understanding of the relationship between oriental and western interpretations of both physiological as psychological syndromes.
  • Introduction to diagnostics: facial diagnostic, tongue, voice and breathing.
